Roles and Responsibilities

I’m the Course Leader for the Masters in Design Technology and Innovation programme.

Biography

I was awarded an MA in Ceramics from South Glamorgan College of Higher Education. I ran my own studio pottery business in Devon for a number of years before returning to full-time education. During this time I undertook a BA with the Open University focusing on science, design and technology before going on to complete my PhD at the Robert Gordon University (RGU) in Aberdeen.

In 1993 I became a full-time researcher and lecturer at RGU. I was awarded a Professorship in 2007 and in 2014 became Director of Research at Norwich University of the Arts (NUA). After two years at NUA I left to become CEO of Inntuito limited, a company specialising in software development for the creative industries.

During my career as a researcher I’ve been responsible for numerous research projects in the UK and in the EU. I’ve published widely on subjects related to design research, design pedagogy and design thinking for SMEs and have been an invited speaker at many universities in the UK and the USA.

I’m currently on the Advisory Board for the European Academy of Design and on the Editorial Review Board for the Design Journal.

Research Interests

I have an eclectic range of research interests including: design for health and wellbeing, empathic design approaches for an aging population, design pedagogy and software design for the creative industries.
