Roles and Responsibilities

Assistant Professor in Fashion and Director of Studies Fashion.

Biography

I am a Fashion design graduate with an MA in Design Education from Middlesex University. Prior to entering higher education and over a period of nine years, I gained strong industry experience in Lingerie, Denim-wear and men’s sportswear.

Since 2001 I have been in higher education, focussing mainly on pattern technology and production. In the last ten years I have evolved to guide and facilitate in design education; design thinking; fashion drawing and illustration; and CAD.

Over the past 18 years, I’ve had the opportunity to teach in South Africa, China and now in Dubai. The cultural diversity brings with it a wealth of knowledge and understanding of student behaviour and how one has to adjust teaching and delivery methods to suit the environment. This supported my MA project: “How will fostering creativity and innovation through design practice with ‘cross-cultural fusion’ evolve existing pedagogy, in design education” that I passed with a distinction and led to co-authoring a book on design practice.

My research area is in design education and design practice. I’m currently undertaking a part time PhD with Heriot-Watt University, title: Reflective practice through design research: ‘A Translation of Practitioner Insights Through a Practice-based Investigation of Couture and Corsetry’. Further interest includes technology and innovation in design practice and pedagogy.
