Scottish Textiles Study Tour

Our three week Study Tours, running in July, allow students to develop their design skills on world-leading, industry standard facilities. According to our honorary graduate, Dame Vivienne Westwood, our School’s facilities “are the best in the UK” and students on the Study Tour enjoy full access to our workshops. Visit the facilities photo gallery to get a feel for work spaces you will be learning in.

Students must select one of the following specialisms to focus on over the 3 week Study Tour programme but there may be opportunity to have a taster session in a second specialism if students request this in advance.

  • Knit
  • Print
  • Weave
  • Fashion Product Development

Students will be set a project brief in their chosen area of knit, weave, print or fashion 2 weeks before they arrive in Scotland, giving students the opportunity to do some preliminary research. The final project is completed and submitted within a week of students’ returning to their home country.

A truly international experience

For the first 2 weeks of the Study Tour, our international students work alongside and socialise with Scottish students, under the guidance of our experienced academics and technicians. We find that international students love learning and socialising with local Scottish students and that this makes the Summer School a truly international experience.

London tour and industry visits

Study Tour students spend the first 2 weeks of the programme in the workshops. learning new skills and developing a design brief alongside Scottish students. They also visit local textile mills which manufacture for international brands including Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Vivienne Westwood. This helps students connect with the latest in high-end manufacture and luxury branding.

In the final week, students spend several days in London, visiting designers and design exhibitions. The London programme changes every year to take advantage of the fast changing world of London fashion and design. In 2015 the London tour included a trip to the Alexander McQueen exhibition at the V&A, billed as the fashion event of the Summer. Students also visited the Fashion and Textiles Museum, established by Zandra Rhodes, Liberty London, the home of  British creative, print and design and many other fashion hotspots.
