Our strong research ethos is reflected in the PhD and MPhil programmes we offer. Research students are presented with exciting opportunities to work in areas that are relevant to the academic community, research-users and employers.

Currently, we have over 25 PhD and MPhil students enrolled on full and part-time study modes, and working on a broad spectrum of topics, including Colour, Light and Interaction; Advanced Materials; Eco-Textiles; Fashion and Design Interpretation; and Textiles Archive.

Students can research any project that fits into our research themes. We support research in a wide range of textile, fashion and design-related disciplines in areas.

The following are examples of our current postgraduate research projects. This is not an exhaustive list, so please contact us to discuss what other projects we can offer:

  • Developing nano-textiles and nano-textile products
  • Optimisation of dyeing processes and surface characteristics for Lyocell fabrics
  • Developing and design of SMART textiles
  • Designing solar powered SMART garments
  • Designing/developing chromic materials, technologies and application methods
  • Digital inkjet printing and ink formulation for textiles
  • Reducing environmental impact of dyeing systems
  • Translation of 2D into 3D designs
  • Fabric modelling
  • Heritage textiles
