Machine Knitted Fabric

We offer both introduction and intermediate level machine knitting workshops. You will be provided with a domestic knitting machine, a range of tools, and a wide selection of yarn. This will be accompanied by comprehensive technical notes and fabric examples, in support of demonstrations by experienced technical staff.

Introduction to Machine Knitted Fabrics

This course is aimed at beginners who have never knitted on a machine before or who would like to build their confidence in using a domestic knitting machine and expand their technical knowledge of its functions and capabilities.

You can use the course to develop explorative knitted samples for portfolio purposes, build a technical library, or take fabrics forward into something more substantial depending on level of ability.

The workshop will cover:

  • Introduction to the knitting machine and its functions.
  • Yarns and fibres, yarn counts, basic casting on, knitting, casting off, and pressing.
  • Introduction into creating textures, patterns and detail using a range of knitting structures and techniques.
  • Punch card patterns. You can work from our pre punched cards or make cards of your own design. The cards can include Fair Isle patterns, motif, tuck stitch or slip stitch.
  • Shaping techniques, using fashioning points and needle widening to create a variety of shapes.
  • Complex partial knitting techniques with colour change and structure detail.
  • Colour matching, designing & planning final creations, in accordance with visual inspiration.
  • There will be further opportunities to create decorative fabrics and to develop ideas into accessories or products.

To help with the design purposes you should bring a collection of inspirational images such as postcards to provide the inspiration for colour, pattern, and texture to be explored within your fabric designs. Once basic techniques have been covered, self-directed creative development will be encouraged so that participants leave with a range of exciting original, exploratory fabrics that are individual to the designer.

  • Creative playful knitting and generating 3-D sculptural forms.
  • Creative trims, embellishment and edges & basic shaping techniques.
  • Construction & finishing techniques.

  • Make & construction of final product.

To help with the design purposes you should bring a collection of inspirational images such as postcards to provide the inspiration for colour, pattern, and texture to be explored within your fabric designs.

Once basic techniques have been covered, self-directed creative development will be encouraged so that participants leave with a range of exciting original, exploratory fabrics and product ideas that are individual to the designer.
